Shirley J Product Information

"no added MSG"

MSG has a natural as well as its synthetic counterpart.

Because we recognize the danger of the chemical MSG, we are not promoting that the Shirley J products products are "MSG free", or that it contains "No MSG". All through our promotions, we state that the products contain “No Added MSG”.  Chemically, there is a difference between these terms:

  • What does “No Added MSG mean”?...
A product in which the list of ingredients states that it contains Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), means that that product contains the synthetic crystalized, flavor-enhancing, man-made, chemical MSG. This is added to the product to enhance the flavor. However, MSG is also a naturally occuring substance in many plants and animals.

The term “No added MSG” means that there may be ingedients in the product which contain naturally occuring MSG. This means that MSG exists naturally when the product is extracted from natural sources.  Hydrolized soy protein (as distinct from hydrolyzed vegetable protein) is one example. These forms of MSG occur in plants and animals and it even occurs naturally in the human body. This form of MSG is practically unavoidable.

Trans Fats. There are actually two Shirley J products which still include the hydrogenated soy bean oil, which is a trans fat: The Shirley J Brownie mix andteh Shirley J Cookie mix. Shirley J still sells these two products and they do have trans fat.  Shirley J is working on reformulating these two products, but because of the "gooey" texture that everyone loves in the brownies and cookies they have not yet been able to find a substitute. Until then, for those who like gooey cookies and brownies, and don't mind the trans fat, these two products are available through Shirley J.

We know that the Shirley J products will not fill the need for every home, but they are convenient meal solutions for our busy users.

If your allergic reaction to MSG is cronic, we recommend that you consult your physician before using any Shirley J product or any other product containing either natural or synthetic MSG.

We agree that whole foods should be the foundation or basis of any food storage program. Our 21-day menu based on whole foods integrating Shirley J products helps you add texture, flavor, and convenience to your food storage.

MSG - America's Dangerous Enemy

"Natural News, reports that:...

MSG, a known neuro toxin, is found in most most foods disguised and labeled as yummy food ingredients.

A book titled “In Bad Taste: The MSG Symptom” by Dr. George Schwartz, contains various references to MSG by Dr. Russell Blaylock. What is reported on this book could shock any reader.

Lets take a look at MSG:

There are two kinds of MSG, natural which occurs naturally in certain plants and legumes and animals, even in humans. These are harmless to humans because it is a natural occurrence. And there is the synthetic MSG, which of course is man made.

Natural MSG (The harmless MSG) is known as L-glutamic acid, an amino acid that is found in plants and animals. It is harmless because our digestive process slowly breaks down this natural or "bound" glutamic acid and through our bodily function it is delivered to receptors in the body and brain, that utilizes it in natural ways.

However, even harmless MSG can become systemic. Eating too many foods high in glutamate can eventually cause build up in the bloodstream. These foods include tomatoes, mushrooms, dairy products, corn, molasses, wheat, and even tobacco.

How does harmless MSG becomes harmful?

In processed foods made from these ingredients mentioned above, the glutamic acid bound broken down, or the bond is made free by processes referred to as hydrolyzed, autolyzed, modified, texturized, or fermented, and is refined to a white crystal form resembling sugar. This by product is then mixed with salt and used as a “flavor enhancer” and used in all sorts of processed foods. This crystallized form or chemical is called Monosodium Glutamate or better known as MSG.

Most processed foods, and a lot of ingredients from which processed foods are made of, contain added MSG."

  • What is added MSG?...

Added MSG means that besides the harmless MSG naturally occurring in various natural sources of food, the synthetic or man made MSG is added to ingredients to enhance the flavor of foods.

And because that taste good sell, harmful MSG or synthetic MSG is added to most processed foods found in the supermarkets, and also in the ingredients to make foods. Thus, as we read the labels of foods at the supermarket, most of them contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) on the list of ingredients.

MSG by other names in your food

Read the ingredients label in your food products, if it contains autolyzed yeast, yeast extract, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed protein, or texturized vegetable protein, it is MSG.

However, hydrolyzed Soy protein is a natural MSG, naturally occurring in soy bean protein, and is not harmful MSG, as explained above.

Maltodextrin, barley malt, whey protein, soy protein isolate (or words to that nature), it is also natural MSG.

Most, but not all, smoke flavor or "flavorings" contain MSG.

Soy sauce, made from the fermentation of soy beans contains MSG and pure MSG powder some times is added to cheaper brands of soy sauce to enhance its flavor.

Spike for example, contains MSG.

The best way to avoid harmful MSG if to read the label of products you are buying, avoid those containing harmful MSG and cook with more natural ingredients..

However, when reading the label of a product compare the label of the same product but in larger bottles, food companies, required by to list MSG in containers, containing less than a certain amount.

For example, in some vegetable Juices the same kind of juice in a large container lists MSG as an ingredient, but not on the smaller sizes.

Is MSG addictive?

MSG, is a common food additive. It is toxic and physically addictive. Fast food companies and other food manufacturers, and even some ice cream and candy companies use MSG as a flavor enhancer in their products. Why is this done? Obviously to not only necessarily to enhance the flavor of the food, but also to enhance sales.

MSG and weight gain

When consumers eat unhealthy foods containing harmful MSG, they often gain weight and feel sluggish, and can experience stiff joints. Some symptoms related to the side affect of "MSG can include headaches, chest pain, heart palpitations, nausea, and can some times experience muscle pain and other heath problems.

Although MSG is well know to be associated with Chinese food, processed meats, and salty snacks, some ice creams and some ice cream syrups and most bouillon cubes, canned soups and vegetables, barbecue sauces and sauce mixes, various salad dressings, and virtually every other processed food you eat, Monosodium Glutamate, or MSG is often one of the ingredients. However , because the public is becoming more aware of the harmful consequences of eating MSG enhanced foods, MSG is not always listed as Monosodium Glutamate, or as MSG on the food labels. It is often disguised as calcium caseinate, gelatin, hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, spices, or natural flavorings. Hydrolyzed soy protein, however, is a natural MSG, and has not , at least as of yet, been identified as a harmful chemical.

Simple Ways to Detox your Life

It may seem like it is impossible to avoid MSG and other harmful substances. While it is difficult to avoid toxins entirely, you can greatly reduce the amount of toxins you consume by eating organic vegetables and fruits, and converting your kitchen to no added MSG products, frozen or fresh produce, whole grains, legumes (And remember legumes such as soy, contains natural MSG, from which hydrolyzed soy protein is extracted, and is not harmful).

Children consume a huge amount of MSG in school lunches. Concerned parents can lower the problem by fixing more lunch bags with foods with no added MSG.

Vibrant Health

The NaturalNews reports that...

What is it that stands between you and vibrant health? People who have spent a fortune on supplements, gotten plenty of exercise and bought high quality food still find themselves unable to answer this question. For many of them, the answer lies in neuro toxins hidden in even the most healthy sounding foods, including many foods labeled as organic. These ingredients often cause serious reactions, including migraines, insomnia, asthma, depression, anxiety, aggression, chronic fatigue, and even ALS. They may be responsible for the swelling numbers of children diagnosed as ADHD.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is probably the best known of the neuro toxins. However, there are many that food additives can come under, even the term natural flavors can, some times, but not often mean that the food may contain additives that could be toxic to the brain and nervous system. To avoid this entirely is nearly impossible, but it can be done, by becoming more educated about harmful chemicals. The way to do this is by obtaining an OSHA MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheet) facts sheet for each chemical you suspect might be harmful. That is going to a long extent, but for those who want to live a harmful chemical free life, there would be no other way to know if a chemical is harmful or not.

Restaurants and harmful chemicals

A lot of restaurants, and especially fast food restaurants, pizza restaurants, and less expensive restaurant foods are another place that harmful chemicals can be found in the food. Or course this makes sence since a lot of the cooking ingredients already come with MSG added. If you are allergic to MSG or have health problems related to MSG. It would be wise to ask if their food contain added MSG, especially if you are eating out at an oriental restaurant. Many oriental restaurants are MSG free.

MSG and Hot Flashes

Women dealing with menopause symptoms, such as mood change and hot flashes may experience those severe hot flashes, swelling of the feet and legs, and even anxiety attacks after eating foods containing MSG.

The NaturalNews also reports that..
.

The first line of defense against the two most commonly used and pernicious food additives, MSG and aspartame, is avoidance. However, complete avoidance is not possible for everyone all the time. MSG, monosodium glutamate, has been disguised with several different names. Aspartame or its primary constituent, aspartic acid, along with disguised variations of MSG, have even shown up in food products or supplements sold in health food stores!

What Are Excitoxins

The NaturalNews report...

“Excitotoxins are amino acids that also serve as neurotransmitters in the brain. The nervous system needs amino acid neurotransmitters to operate. But when the dose is too high or builds from excessive daily intake, these amino acids cross the blood brain barrier and excite the neurons of brain cells to a point of absolute exhaustion. Then those brain neurons eventually begin to die.

“As one consumes MSG or aspartame over time, there is a formaldehyde byproduct from metabolizing these toxic ingredients. The formaldehyde binds with cellular DNA and causes DNA damage. It tends to stick to the DNA and over time the formaldehyde accumulation causes massive cell damage, which breeds diseases of all sorts, even cancer.

“Within the brain and throughout the nervous system, heart, and intestinal tract there are glutamate receptors or channels. So it is not only the brain that is affected by excitotoxins over time. If one is lacking in glutamate or other excitoxin protection naturally, drinking or eating a large quantity of MSG or aspartame laced liquid at one time can result in an immediate negative physical reaction.”

Natural Protection From Excititoxic Reactions

Magnesium has been discovered to help impede glutamates from overloading glutamate receptors. People with magnesium deficiency are prone to acute excitotoxicity. This can cause severe digestive problems, headache, or even heart attack. Magnesium is important for overall health in addition to blocking glutamate sensors or channels from excitotoxin overload.

Excitotoxin Detox

Aspartame is obvious and easy to recognize. It's in all artificial sweeteners, diet sodas, and sugar free sports drinks as well as in many sugar free processed foods. Don't confuse this with Stevia, which is a natural and safe sugar substitute. However, MSG is disguised with several names.

A good natural body cleansing system should help detoxify your body. Also, when you are experiencing symptoms, related to MSG, one tall glass of water with the juice of one lemon, followed by one 8 oz glass of water every hour for 3 hours, helps cleanse the MSG from your body faster.

Natural News also reports that...

To enhance and ensure detoxification, Dr. Blaylock recommends Milk Thistle to help the liver eliminate all toxins. Curcumin is the essential ingredient of turmeric. It enhances bile flow as well as DNA repair enzymes. He also recommends Taurine, an amino acid that contains sulfur to aid the liver, as well as vitamins B1 and B6 and vitamins C and E."
